Logitech G510s Gaming Keyboard Review

Enter the Logitech G510s gaming keyboard with an embedded LCD screen. It’s a larger non-mechanical keyboard with 18 special programmable keys, onboard playback, and recording devices, monochrome LCD screen and some special media keys and related functions. It was shipped with the mainboard and instruction manual. To adjust programmable buttons, set profiles, and record macros, you must download Logitech gaming software.

Easier setup than most. The keyboard is connected via a single USB cable. That might not sound impressive. But the G510 has a 3.5mm jack for headphone and microphone. Usually, this port is just a pass-through for your motherboard’s built-in audio device or aftermarket sound card. You will connect your headset to the keyboard and attach the appropriate set of headphones and microphone jacks to your PC. Logitech G510s has its playback and recording device which locate inside the keyboard. Connect your stereo headset/microphone to the 3.5mm port on the G510s, and a new playback and recording device will be available for you to choose on standard Windows audio devices. It’s handy, and the stereo audio quality is excellent. It also frees the headphones and mic port on your PC.

Once connected and ready to use, you must retrieve the Gaming Software from the company’s website. It is a robust set of tools. But don’t be intimidated. It’s very intuitive and easy to use. With a little play around you can record some very complicated macros to turn several keypresses into a series of single press functions and relieve finger cramp acrobatics needed in some games such as Warframe – where complicated parkour movements often require several keypresses split second apart from each other. You can also program a button to open a program or launch a website bookmark.

With the software, you can make some critical changes to the LCD display. First, this is a monochrome LCD, so, the background and text have the same color. Which says you can still have fun. The G510 comes with several supported applets. You get a time section with time and date, a countdown timer to help you track cooldowns to search for strengths and the like, RSS readers, performance monitors, media displays, and profile selector. RSS readers are cool, but there is no way to playback through unread RSS feeds. You can only go forward and roll back up. The monitor is good and shows the percentage of CPU and memory usage. The media display is entirely new and only shows one meter of playing time remaining.

But the G510 supports several 3rd party applets such as EV X Precision video card monitoring software. This brings up your GPU’s vital, frame rate, and more right on the LCD screen. It is great if you don’t want to mess up the screen in your game. Teamspeak and Fraps are also supported. Unfortunately, Teamspeak’s integration is far from convincing. It can see and move channels between them with a button just below the LCD. But you can’t see who is on the channel. So you certainly can’t see when someone is talking. For comparison, this is a feature available in Mad Cats STRIKE 7 which we review. Many would think LCD is the main point of interest for this particular keyboard. Not this one!

It’s the little things that make the G510 general so awesome. The key to special media is fantastic. There are play buttons for volume, and buttons to play/pause and jump forward and backward through your media tracks and/or playlists. Eighteen programmable buttons offer many customization options. But that can be tripled because each button can hold three different macros. The board is well set out, sturdy without too heavy and awkward like STRIKE 7 and typing on it is a gift. We often go on about the speed and lack of latency that users provide with mechanical lock switches. Again G510 is not mechanical. But typing is no less fast and responsive. This key switch is much quieter than the more audible variations of the CherryMX switch.

There really are only a few complaints about the latest Logitech LCD keyboard. There is no USB hub. Monochrome single color is one, and limited features are set on some of the applets it supports. But We also found the colored backlight (adjustable in Gaming Software) to be very dim without brightness settings (on and off do not count). Weigh it against what it does well, and you have a one-sided argument that prioritizes performance and ultimately users

The Bad > Monochrome LCD means limited color options, Backlighting on keys is dim, No USB hub

The Good > Fantastic speed and comfort, 18 dedicated programmable keys = 54 functions total, Dedicated media keys, Limited but useful LCD screen, Embedded audio devices

Conclusion > It’s comfortable with more customization options than the competition. Some of the listed issues are addressed in the more expensive G19s keyboard. But if financing are in question, and the LCD screen is not a deciding factor, then you will be more than satisfied with the Logitech G510s Gaming Keyboard.
