Logitech C615 HD Webcam Review
Logitech HD C615 is a reliable and compact webcam with a balance of features, image quality, and excellent portability. Among other specifications, this webcam offers 1080p resolution, 8 megapixel still images, autofocus, and glass lens. Besides, the flip-and-go design makes it easy for you to take it anywhere.
Like many other webcams, this specification comes with a few caveats. It can only capture in 1080p when the framerate decreases dramatically, and next, the 8-megapixel camera specifications are achieved through interpolation – a process in which additional pixels are added using an algorithm.
These facts, however, are real for most PC cameras, and they do not change the truth that the Logitech C615 is one of the best webcams that you can buy. For a combination of image quality, features, and design, the Logitech HD C615 is the winner of our Big Ten Silver Award.
The C615 records video in 1080p, which produces great-looking images with lots of detail. The problem is that the framerate must be taken down to get there, which means your recording will not be as smooth as possible. If you need a resolution, you can save it at 1080p and only deal with videos that are a little slow.
However, we think that most people end up shooting in 720p to keep the framerate at 30 fps. Although you will lose some details in doing this, we believe it is the most practical way to use C615. If you need a little extra resolution but don’t want to sacrifice framerate, see our review of the Logitech HD Pro C920.
The C615 internal microphone produces some audio with the best sound from any product in our comparison. It often sounds more precise and more natural than some cameras that offer dual microphones. It also does a great job of reducing noise and keeping the surrounding noise, hissing, and buzzing to a minimum.
This webcam offers autofocus to make sure you look sharp at all times and face tracking to monitor which frame parts are most important. Using these two things, the C615 does an excellent job of keeping your face focused and adjusting the white balance and exposure to skin tone that looks natural. Some cameras can be a bit slow to make adjustments, but the C615 is fast and accurate.
One significant omission from this webcam feature list is digital zoom. It is a process in which the camera cuts the edges of the image and enlarges the remaining vision to make the subject appear closer. That means you really lose pixels and effectively reduce the overall resolution of your image. However, digital zoom can be useful for times when you want to zoom quickly, and unless you like to do some post-production work on your webcam footage, there is no other way to do it.
Apart from a few minor problems, the C615 has an excellent design. It’s folding and compact, which makes it far more portable than anything we have reviewed. That is great if you travel a lot and want to bring your webcam. Keep in mind, however, that this emphasis on portability means you also have a USB cable that is much shorter – only 3 feet compared to an ordinary 6.
It also has a built-in microphone and glass lens. This microphone is standard. But the results are reasonable compared to ours with other cameras. Glass lenses will give you better optical quality and durability than plastic, so your images will look better, and you are less likely to face damaging scratches.
This camera is also compatible with tripods. That can be very handy for those who cannot easily attach a camera to their display or those who prefer a different angle from a typical live view. Wherever it is mounted, the C615 is capable of panning from left to right and tilting up and down independently, so you will always be able to make adjustments to get the perfect angle.
Logitech is one big name in the webcam industry, and its products tend to come with the most comprehensive support. HD C615 offers a two-year warranty, during which you are protected from damage to components and labor. If other issues or questions arise, you also have access to Logitech support by phone and email. Also, you can check the FAQs and forums on the Logitech site to get quick answers to frequently asked questions.
In terms of raw picture and audio quality, the Logitech HD C615 is an outstanding camera. When you take that quality and put it in a design that is more portable and more functional than most, you get a camera that is truly at another level. While it can’t boast of the best resolution out there, this is an excellent compact camera that is more than enough for most users.
- Its short USB cord could interfere with placement.
- This webcam is tripod compatible
Conclusion > The Logitech HD C615 offers solid image quality, a great design and all of the features you’re likely to want in a webcam. For all but those seeking the best resolution-framerate combinations, the C615 is an excellent choice.
