Logitech C270 HD Webcam Review
Not long ago we needed a new webcam for one of our computers. We don’t want to spend too much money, but we want to buy a webcam with decent specifications and pretty good video quality. We finally chose the Logitech HD C270 Webcam. We have been using it for some time, and after learning all the ups and downs, we think it’s good to share with you what we found in this review.
Install the Logitech HD C270 Webcam
When we try to connect the Logitech HD Webcam C270 to a Windows 8.1 computer, it was immediately recognized. The operating system automatically starts downloading and installing the appropriate driver. When the process is complete, we check to see if additional software is installed. In addition to the driver, the webcam only adds a modern application called Logitech Camera Controller. That is a straightforward application that only offers a few links to several Logitech web pages where you could do things like registering your device, access support options, or provide feedback.
You start using the Camera application to operate and control your webcam. The webcam will function very well without further configuration.
However, if you want to have more control over its settings, we recommend that you download the Logitech Webcam Software. That will allow you to do things like taking photos & videos, share it to Facebook or YouTube, set advanced camera settings, use face tracking, or enable motion detection.
If you are using Windows 7, the operating system identifies the Logitech HD Webcam C270 as a USB Composite Device. Although the camera will work well in any video application, in this case, we strongly recommend that you download and install the Logitech Webcam Software. In addition to all the features we mentioned earlier, this software will also ensure that your camera uses the best and latest drivers.
Using The Logitech HD Webcam C270
As we mentioned before, Logitech HD Webcam C270 works well out of the box. The image quality is more than decent, the color looks natural, and the contrast is OK. All of these statements are true even in darker environments.
The built-in webcam microphone works very well and manages to pick up the sound even remotely. We tested it using Skype, and the people on the other end of the phone could hear us clearly even when we were more than 15 feet from the webcam.
If you want to take advantage of all the webcam features and get access to the further settings it offers, you must install Logitech Webcam Software. This software allows you to take pictures or record videos, manage and share these media files, schedule recording tasks, adjust image settings such as lighting, brightness, contrast or color, and so on.
The only feature that we found interesting was the software’s ability to record videos automatically when the motion was detected. With just a few sets, you can turn your computer into a surveillance device.
The only thing where a webcam or better say Logitech Webcam Software fails is the lack of video effects or picture frames. Although these are not things we will miss, some users might appreciate them.
In the picture above, we took a photo of the Logitech HD C270 Webcam mounted on a 24-inch monitor. As you can see, this is a small camera that won’t interfere, no matter where you are.
However, we don’t like the fact that this camera can only be rotated on the vertical axis. If you want to turn it horizontally, you are out of luck, because the installation system does not allow this kind of movement.
Also, the installation system has another flaw: this camera is quite unstable and can easily fall if you use it on a laptop. Otherwise, if you intend to use it on a desktop PC, in this case, the webcam doesn’t have to hold a lot of movement, you won’t have any problems.
Logitech HD Webcam C270 is not a high-end device. However, this is an HD camera with a very affordable price tag that gives everything you expect from it. You buy that, you plug it in, and it just works. Also, the video quality is decent, and the microphone is excellent even when you are away from the camera. The only thing we will defend is a corrupt installation system. If you’re not too pretentious, if you need a webcam that works out of the box and if you don’t want to spend too much money, then Logitech HD Webcam C270 is a good purchase for you.
- Fixed focus
- Poor exposure control
- Slightly distracting noise in low light
- Cheap as chips
- Great microphone
- Decent detail in good light
- A doddle to configure
Conclusion > Cheap with solid performance. It might not produce stunning HD images, but the video quality is more than enough for Skype calls, and far better than any laptop’s built-in camera.
